ULTRASONIC TESTING (UT)

Ultrasound testing is one of the more common non-destructive testing methods performed on materials. UT NDT examination is an Accurate inspection by using high frequency sound. This is an inspection method which allows for flaw detection within the volume of a material. Using this technique you can “look” inside a weld.

The technique is based on the induction of high frequency ultrasonic energy into the material to be tested. The amount of reflected energy caused by a (sub)surface defect is then compared to the applied acceptance criteria. Ultrasonic examination is not limited to weld inspection. It can also be used for thickness measurement, inspection of castings, forgings and corrosion detection in structures on both on and offshore.

WHAT IT WILL FOUND?

Most manufacturing flaws (lack of sidewall fusion, lack of root fusion, lack of root penetration, porosity, solidification cracking, etc.) and in-service flaws (fatigue cracking, stress corrosion cracking, etc.).

We can carry out UT Inspection of welds made in both ferritic and non-ferritic metals in pressure vessels, pipework, storage tanks, bridge structures etc.

APPLICATIONS

Since 1994 we have built a reputable track record within the Offshore, Maritime, Waste to Energy and Renewable industries. We can carry out Ultrasonic Testing (UT) at many structures:

  • insert plates
  • vessel hulls
  • pipe/pipe
  • offshore constructions
  • tubes
  • cranes
  • plates

ADVANTAGES & BENEFITS

The advantages of UT;

  • Capable of portable or highly automated operation
  • Can be performed on all types of materials
  • High accuracy and reproducibility in flaws detection
  • Generally only one surface needs to be accessible
  • Fluid level check in enclosure
  • Materials characterisation
